'Tucna to celebrate July 4

Old-fashioned fun on tap for Independence Day

WASHTUCA – Looking for some old-fashioned, Fourth of July fun?

Look no further.

Washtucna’s annual Independence Day celebration is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Bassett Park.

At that time, a parade is set to march in patriotic fashion.

“We haven’t done a parade since the pandemic, so we’re going to do a little one around the park,” event spokeswoman Lora Hille said, noting that’s just the start of the local fun.

Parade entries are still welcome, she said, noting anyone wishing to join in can email her at [email protected].

After the parade, there will be a flag ceremony presented by Ritzville Boy Scout Troop No. 888.

And the Washtucna School Band is planning a potluck barbecue, she said. “It’s kind of a tradition in Washtucna,” she said, noting the barbecue this year includes French dips and hotdogs.

Those coming to the barbecue should bring a side dish, she said, noting the by-donation meal benefits the Washtucna School band’s travel expenses.

Lemonade and iced tea will also be available.

The park will also feature a number of youth-oriented games, hosted by the Lion’s Club, she said.

Whether you’re watching the parade or just enjoying the barbecue and Americana in full bloom, Hille suggests bringing a lawn chair.

At dusk, ‘Tucna traditionally has an “unofficial” personal fireworks display, where residents get together for a couple hours to light personal fireworks under the watchful eyes of local volunteer firefighters.
