Othello girls take fourth at state

Area girls teams do well at Mat Classic XXXV

TACOMA - The Othello Huskies girls wrestling team finished fourth in the state Mat Classic XXXV tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17, in the Tacoma Dome.

The Adams County girls amassed 87.0 team points in the small school girls division (1B-2A). Toppenish won with 166.0 points, followed by Orting with 103.0 in second and Royal with 89.5.

Warden was fifth with 83.0 points.

Othello had several girls in the state tournament.

Those placing include Grayce Mendez, fourth at 110; Diamond Van Cleve, fifth at 135; Elia Velazquez, second at 190; and Alejandria Espindola, fourth at 235.

Other Huskies in the girls tournament included Bella Garza at 105, Grace Rocha at 115, Briseida Galvez at 120, Serenity Ayala at 125 and Kiara Haertling at 145.

Nearby Royal and Warden each had one individual champion.

Warden's Jada Hernandez won the state title at 120 pounds, with a 4-2 decision over Brooklyn Jones of Orting in the championship. And Royal's Emma Villa won the title at 170 pounds with a 6-1 championship decision over Kya Roundtree of Montesano.
