Officer shoots suspect near Hatton

HATTON – An independent investigation is reviewing an officer-involved shooting Sunday, June 25, near Kulm Road in this tiny community just west of U.S. Highway 395.

According to Grant County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kyle Foreman, the shooting is being reviewed by the Central Basin Investigative Team.

Few details had been released publicly, Foreman said at press time. But at least one person was injured, declining to say who.

Foreman said he could not yet release the names of the officers involved or the suspect, noting that is has to go through a vetting process first.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was equally tight-lipped about the incident, as is required by law.

According to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the rural community to assist Othello police in locating a suspect for a crime in the city limits.

“Information was received the suspect was in the area of S. Kulm Road and West S.R. 26 Othello in rural Adams County,” the statement said. “Deputies and OPD officers responded to the area.

“The suspect was located and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the statement said. “The public, officers and deputies are safe and uninjured.”

Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner confirmed the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure in such a case.

According to Foreman, there will be regular updates on the status of the case as the vetting process allows.
