Lind hosts annual combine derby

LIND - Thousands of fans turned out Saturday, June 8, to witness the destruction of farm equipment during the 35th annual Lind Lion's Club Combine Derby.

Weekend festivities also also featured a car show, parade through town, a barbecue in the park, car racing, and pickup and grain truck races, including an Australian Pursuit and powder puff races.

The weekend was capped off with a live performance Fred Bauer band in the arena.

The Combine Derby is a demolition-style derby, except drivers are piloting 15-plus-ton farm implements.

This year's derby featured drivers from Lind, Othello, Chewelah, Rosalia, Pullman, Cheney and even Urbandale, Iowa.

It was a fight to the finish, which culminated in a three-way tie for first place in the derby.

Tyran Doyle of Lind, driving "The Extinguisher," tied for first with Grady Gfeller of Pullman, riding "Search & Destroy" and Kyhle Young of Dusty, piloting "Cornfed Cadillac."

Other Lind locals competing in the event included Derrick Laird driving The Cavy, Bryden Laird on Pour Life Choices, Branden Aby of BBC, Matt Miller on Jaws, Nick Labes on Grain Digger and Thomas Rosen on The Bulley.

Jeb Buddey of Rosalia was aboard the purple Prom Queen entry, a new competitor this year.

And from Cheney, Cody Kulm was the driver for The Bandit team.

Fun was had by all, even through the hot and windless temperature.

The heat was felled a bit when the Action water truck blasted the crowd with welcoming water.

A lucky raffle winner had the option of taking $500, or driving the Lind Lions Club combine in the main event - an opportunity he could not pass up and he got to be part of the action.

The combine derby is set to be back in action next year on June 13-14.
