OLYMPIA — With a nod from the so-called Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday night that children as young as 12 can now be vaccinated against the Wuhan coronavirus.

The workgroup, a review panel comprising officials from Oregon, Washington, California and Nevada, followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's and U.S. Food and Drug Administration's determination the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is safe for children 12 years and older.

The Food and Drug Administration approved of the vaccine's use on children ages 12-15 Monday. A CDC advisory committee affirmed the approval Wednesday.

“We are very pleased that teens can now be vaccinated," Gov. Jay Inslee said following the workgroup's approval. "We have seen an increase in cases among this age group, and we can now make sure they are protected with the vaccine."
